On our blog, you will find all of the latest recommendations, information, and tips regarding skincare and the aesthetic industry.

Did you know the order you apply your skincare can make or break how well your products work? You can buy the best serum on the market, but if it goes on over a heavy cream, it may never reach your skin.
I'm Amy Hawkins, FNP-C, the injector and nurse practitioner behind 29 Aesthetics in Bluffdale, Utah. Here's the simple routine I recommend to every client, plus the exact products I use myself every day.
The general rule is simple: apply products from thinnest to thickest. Lightweight, water-based products absorb best on clean skin. Richer creams and oils sit on top and seal everything in. Get the order backward, and thicker products can block the active ingredients you're paying for.
Start every routine with a clean face. In the evening, double cleansing is a great habit: the first cleanse removes makeup and sunscreen, and the second cleans the skin itself. Even if you went bare-faced all day, skin still collects dust, oil, and particles that get trapped in pores.
If you use a toner, apply it right after cleansing. A good toner preps the skin and helps the products that follow absorb better. It's an optional step, so skip it if your skin is happy without one.
Serums deliver the most concentrated active ingredients, so they go on early. If you use more than one, follow the thinnest-to-thickest rule: lighter serums first, thicker ones after.
Timing matters too:
Morning: antioxidants like vitamin C help protect skin from environmental damage during the day.
Night: hydrating serums and retinol do their best work while your skin repairs overnight.
Moisturizer locks everything in and keeps your skin barrier healthy. Even oily or acne-prone skin benefits from a moisturizer suited to its type.
Sunscreen is the non-negotiable step, every single morning, all year long. In Utah, high elevation means stronger UV exposure, and snow reflects sunlight back onto your face in winter. Daily SPF is one of the best things you can do to prevent fine lines, sun spots, and collagen breakdown.
Step | Morning | Night |
|---|---|---|
1. Cleanser | Yes | Yes (double cleanse) |
2. Toner | Optional | Optional |
3. Serum | Vitamin C or antioxidant | Retinol or hydrating serum |
4. Moisturizer | Yes | Yes |
5. SPF | Yes | No |
I carry Alastin's medical-grade skincare because it's what I use every day and what I recommend to my clients. A consistent at-home routine makes a real difference in how your skin looks and how long your Botox, filler, and other professional treatments last.
Gentle Cleanser (AM/PM). Hydrates, nourishes, and soothes the skin with linoleic acid, oat kernel, silver mushroom, and Alastin's TriHex Technology®.
C-RADICAL Defense Antioxidant Serum (AM/PM). A vitamin C serum that helps brighten the complexion and protect elastin.
Renewal Retinol (PM). Smooths skin texture, evens tone, and reduces the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
Ultra Nourishing Moisturizer (AM/PM). Hydrates, nourishes, and soothes to support a healthy skin barrier.
Restorative Neck Complex. Targets texture, pigmentation, and wrinkles on the neck and chest, two areas that often show aging early. Apply it after your serums, on the neck and décolleté.
HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 36 (AM). A tinted mineral sunscreen that protects from the sun, keeps skin hydrated, and gives a smooth, natural finish.
Cleanser, toner (optional), vitamin C or antioxidant serum, moisturizer, then SPF. Sunscreen always goes last in the morning.
Double cleanse, toner (optional), retinol or hydrating serum, then moisturizer. Skip SPF at night.
Give each layer about 30 seconds to a minute to absorb before applying the next. That helps prevent pilling and lets each product work.
Many people do best using vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night. This keeps irritation low and lets each ingredient do its job at the right time.
A good routine supports healthier skin, which helps your results look their best. Daily SPF, a retinol, and a consistent moisturizer all protect collagen and skin quality between appointments.
The best skincare routine is the one you'll actually stick with. If you're not sure where to start, or you want a routine that supports your Botox and microneedling results, I'm happy to help.
