Even with the best skincare routine, your skin still takes a hit in the winter.
I'm Amy Hawkins, FNP-C, the injector behind 29 Aesthetics in Bluffdale, Utah. By the end of each winter, I typically see the same concerns in my clients' skin:
Dehydration
Sluggish cell turnover
Congested pores
A skin barrier that's just not performing like it should
If your skin feels dull, tight, or textured, this is your sign to hit the reset button. My favorite treatment for a spring skin refresh is microneedling with PRF.
Microneedling creates tiny, controlled micro-channels in the skin. Those channels trigger your body's natural healing response, which stimulates collagen and helps clear out congestion.
PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) is made from a small sample of your own blood. It's rich in growth factors that accelerate healing. When it's applied during microneedling, it travels into those micro-channels and boosts your results.
Together, they give you:
Smoother texture
Refined pores
A stronger skin barrier
That lit-from-within glow
After months of dry air and indoor heat, spring is the natural time to repair what winter left behind. The sun isn't at full summer strength yet, which makes healing easier, and your results have time to build before summer.
If you're dealing with winter dryness right now, these [winter skin care tips](link to winter skin post) can help in the meantime.
First, a small amount of blood is drawn and processed to create your PRF. A numbing cream is applied before microneedling so the treatment stays comfortable. The PRF is applied to the skin during and after microneedling.
Most people have redness for one to three days, similar to a mild sunburn. Your skin may feel tight or dry for a few days afterward. Many people go back to normal activities the next day.
You'll notice a glow within the first week or two, and results keep improving over the following weeks as new collagen builds. For the best results, many people do a series of treatments spaced about four to six weeks apart.
Pair your treatment with skincare that keeps your skin healthy between appointments. Two of my Alastin favorites:
C-RADICAL Defense Antioxidant Serum: a vitamin C serum that helps brighten skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, photo damage, and other signs of aging.
Ultra Nourishing Moisturizer with TriHex Technology®: calms, nourishes, and hydrates the skin while supporting healthy collagen and elastin.
And always finish your morning routine with [daily sunscreen](link to sunscreen post), especially after microneedling.
Both are made from your own blood. PRF is spun at a lower speed without anticoagulants, so it releases growth factors more gradually. Many providers prefer it for skin rejuvenation.
Numbing cream is applied beforehand, so most people find it very tolerable. You may feel light pressure or a mild scratching sensation.
It depends on your goals. Many people see a noticeable glow after one session, but a series of about three treatments gives the best results for texture, pores, and fine lines.
Expect redness for one to three days. Most people are back to their normal routine within a day or two.
Avoid makeup, active ingredients like retinol, intense workouts, and direct sun exposure for a few days. I'll give you detailed aftercare instructions at your appointment.
