The Mineral Sunscreen I Wear Daily as a Bluffdale Injector

Don't Let This One Skincare Step Keep You From Glowing Skin

You can have the best serums, the best moisturizer, and regular tox appointments, but if you skip sunscreen, your skin will show it. SPF is the one step that protects everything else you're doing for your skin.

I'm Amy Hawkins, FNP-C, the injector behind 29 Aesthetics in Bluffdale, Utah. Here's why sunscreen matters so much, why I choose mineral formulas, and the two sunscreens I wear myself.

Why SPF Matters So Much in Utah

Sun exposure is one of the biggest causes of early skin aging. UV rays break down collagen and elastin, which leads to fine lines, sagging, sun spots, and uneven tone.

In Utah, the sun is a year-round concern. Higher elevation means stronger UV exposure, and in winter, snow reflects sunlight back onto your face. Whether you're hiking, at the pool, or just driving around the valley, daily SPF is essential for healthy-looking skin.

Sunscreen also protects your investment. Sun damage works against the results of treatments like tox and microneedling, so wearing SPF every day helps your results look better and last longer.

Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen: What's the Difference?

There are two main types of sunscreen:

  • Mineral sunscreen uses zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. It sits on the skin's surface and reflects UV rays away. Mineral formulas tend to be gentler, which makes them a good choice for sensitive skin and for skin that's healing after treatments.

  • Chemical sunscreen uses ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate that absorb UV rays. These ingredients work well for many people, but some can irritate sensitive skin, and many people prefer to avoid them.

I prefer mineral protection for my own skin and for my clients.

Why I Love Alastin Sunscreen

Alastin's sunscreens check every box for me:

  • 100% mineral protection with zinc oxide

  • Free from oxybenzone, octinoxate, and synthetic fragrance, ingredients commonly found in drugstore sunscreens

  • Packed with antioxidants to support healthy, radiant skin

They feel good, look great, and help protect against early signs of aging.

The Two Mineral Sunscreens I Wear

Alastin HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 36

This is my pick when I want a little coverage. It works like a tinted moisturizer with SPF protection: lightweight, with a glowy finish that evens out skin tone.

Best for: everyday wear, a no-makeup makeup look, and evening out redness.

Alastin SilkSHIELD® All Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 with TriHex Technology®

I reach for this non-tinted option when I want a clean face with no makeup. It's gentle, sheer, and soothing on the skin.

Best for: sensitive skin, wearing under makeup, and anyone who prefers no tint.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Sunscreen

  • Apply it last in your morning routine. Sunscreen goes on after moisturizer as the final step. See [the skincare routine I swear by as a Bluffdale, Utah injector](link to routine post) for the full order.

  • Use enough. About a nickel-sized amount for your face, plus more for your neck and chest.

  • Wear it every day. UV rays come through clouds and car windows, so cloudy days count too.

  • Reapply when you're outdoors. Reapply about every two hours, and right after swimming or sweating.

Sunscreen FAQs

Is mineral sunscreen better than chemical sunscreen?

Both protect your skin when used correctly. Mineral sunscreen is often better tolerated by sensitive skin, and it's a great choice if you want to avoid ingredients like oxybenzone.

Does mineral sunscreen leave a white cast?

Some do, but many newer formulas don't. A tinted mineral sunscreen like HydraTint blends in and helps avoid a white cast altogether.

What SPF should I use on my face?

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher for daily use.

Do I need sunscreen in the winter?

Yes. UV rays are present year-round, and in Utah, snow reflects sunlight and increases your exposure.

Can I wear sunscreen after Botox or microneedling?

Yes. Sunscreen is especially important after treatments. After microneedling, a gentle mineral sunscreen is the best choice while your skin heals.
